Sophomore Design Studio
GD201: Design for Context & Experience
Conscious Co. was born from a desire to draw attention to the harmful effects of fast fashion through satire. Each clothing piece was handcrafted by myself and fellow designer, Anabel Russo, out of thrifted materials. We seek to call out the fashion industry for its growing focus on quantity over quality and the ignorance of fast fashion consumers who choose to ignore its effects.
About The Project
Throughout the semester, our studio focused on the role of research in the design process. Whether a design takes form as an interface, product, or environment, it can be used to explore topics in visual, speculative, or physical ways.
Our task for this final project of the semester was to use design to speculate a future-facing societal topic. Through both traditional research and visual design, our task was to allow the viewer to explore and understand the topic from another angle.
Our chosen topic was fashion/clothes. Our vision was to create a mock website satirically celebrating the trends in overproduction, excessive waste, and labor rights violations prevalent across some of the largest fast-fashion companies.
Project Reflection
This project was my first experience designing webpages. Conscious Co. is dear to my heart now that I am pursuing a career in digital interface design. I remember having a true passion for hand-creating each fashion piece by hand and discovering how each webpage would work together to tell a story.
